Inhabited since the end of the last Ice Age, the island and its near neighbour Wee Cumbrae have witnessed a variety of inhabitants from monastic scholars to Viking warriors and from smugglers to Customs officers. In recent times it became the fashionable destination for Victorian holidaymakers and today it is a very popular destination for day trippers and a location of choice for a variety of annual events including a maritime festival, raft race, country & western festival and the very popular “September Weekend”. Many other events take place throughout the year and details can be found in the monthly “What’s On Guide” which is produced throughout the summer months.
For its size, Millport has a surprising range of shops including newsagents, grocers, butcher, toy shop, clothing, electrical, hardware and gift shops. There are also three bike hire shops and a good variety of cafes, tearooms, a bistro and licensed premises.
